Poker is a five card game which is played worldwide and became very popular among the players. The history of poker is divided into various parts such as:-

The Birth of Poker

The emergence of poker game was arrived in Canada during the 17 th century when the French colonials brought with them this card game which was earlier known as ‘poque’. This game did not become so famous till the 18 th century in New Orleans . Poker was played by many soldiers as the pass time during the civil war. Various versions of poker like ‘Draw’ and ‘Stud’ emerged during this period. Till 1834, this game was not given the title ‘Poker’. Green, the gambler gave this card game titled ‘Poker’.

Green begins his career as a professional card player and discovers different versions of the game. He also described various versions of the game as the ‘Cheating Game’. This game rapidly became popular above the previous card game known as 3-card monte.

The Evolution of Poker

Since the origin of poker, this game has increased worldwide and developed various forms of poker games. After sometime, this card game, ‘Poker’ was regarded as the most popular game played by the people in the whole world. The card game, 5 card stud or draw was the first poker game which became famous all over the world. Next game, 7 card stud and Texas Holdem came and became popular among the players.

After the evolution and birth of poker, the 52 card English deck was used and the flush was also launched during this period. After that stud poker, draw poker and the straight were also introduced in the poker game. Split-pot poker, wild card, community card poker and lowball poker games were introduced up to the year 1925. Poker game was also became popular in other countries and spread to Asia , America , and Europe . This game and jargon of poker became essential parts of English and American culture.

The terms which were used while playing poker at the poker table were call one’s bluff, pass the buck, ace up one’s sleeve, stack up, ace in the hole, poker face, wild card, cash in, beats me, up the ante, blue chip, high roller and when the chips are down. The history of poker also depicts various tournaments in the past like World Series of Poker which commenced in the year 1970. World Poker Tour was also introduced in the past in which the players can actively take part in the event and win the pot.
